I almost choked as I heard these words.
I have a genetic mutation that makes me 40% likely to get ovarian cancer in my lifetime. The problem with this is that ovarian cancer in not easily detected until it is quite advanced. So it is recommended to have everything removed preemptively.
Oh shit. Well…I guess I better get on that! I have a boyfriend, I like him a lot. He wants kids. We are financially ready.
But what about my career?
Why, as a woman, do I feel I’m selling myself short if I take myself off the grid for a while. Specifically if I do this to focus on family?
But seriously, when I’m really honest with myself I’m scared of not living up to “my potential”. I know full well what I am capable of. And it’s a huge responsibility.
I know I can be a world changer, I know I can make a difference. I know my voice matters. Not that I have anything anyone else doesn’t have. But we all have to ask ourselves these questions.
But what if I took a break for a while? What if I took myself out of the “world shaking game” for several years in order to focus on family?
I know what you are thinking because I thought the same thing. Why can’t you do both? Why can’t you have both family and career?
Because I don’t want to. If I am going to be a mom, I am going to do it right.
I’m on the verge of something with my career. For the last three years I’ve been branding myself: YogaSurfMel, the girl who quit her life to surf big waves, eating disorder recovery, 100 days in Mexico, etc. And it’s just starting to take off. I’m getting 100 new friends per day in facebook. I just got a board sponsor and a bikini sponsor. I’ve recently been able to interview for various websites and podcasts. The kind of growth I’m looking for will be exponential. When it hits, it is going to hit hard and fast. I’m almost there. I’m thinking just one more year or so and my influance will be large.
Sure a part of me wants this for my ego, but it’s really not about that. I have been through a lot in my life. I want to help people. I want to do my part to change this world, to bring hope and peace. And this is my part. So how can I just put all this down for the next 10ish years while I raise children? Is that irresponsible?
I’m certainly not the first woman faced with this dilemma.What about raising children? Isn’t that a greater contribution than some book, or some influential website? Honestly I don’t know. Because I don’t know what the future holds. No one does.
And am I just scared of the commitment that will be required of me? Am I scared I will want out after a few years? Hell yes I am!
Sitting with this is uncomfortable. And the truth is that lack of action is actually the same as making a decision — my clock is ticking, faster than most women. What will I do?
