An adventure with Carl started early one morning
My van was a lot of work to drive from place to place because it was so big. So three of us all piled into Carl’s compact car, strapped boards to the roof, and took off down a dirt road to try to find some good waves. It had rained a significant amount the night before for the first time in a while.
Washed Out Roads
Carl stopped the car in the middle of the dirt road, rolled up his cargo pants about 8 inches and got out to check the depth of a large puddle of murky grey water in front of us. Without caution, he stomped straight into the mud where the water quickly reached his cargo pockets and beyond. He waded knee deep into the the center of the puddle before he turn around and came back to the car.
The car had AC so we were all waiting inside with the windows up. Carl got back in the driver’s seat while water drained on the floor boards from the corners of the lower cargo pockets.
Carl always spoke really slow and took a long time to say anything. He sat there for a brief moment silent.
“Entonces? No podemos pasar.” Chome, our Mexican guide, suggested we probably should not try to drive through knee deep water with a compact car.
“Yo creo que si.” Carl said in his matter of fact, monotone voice.
I said nothing, if Carl thinks he can drive through the water, let him try. I hung on tightly as Carl hit the gas. We were less than 10 feet into the 40 foot crossing when his tires began to spin. Chome jumped out to push as Carl put the car in reverse. Mud sprayed everywhere from under the tires, blasting Chome in the face. We all started to laugh.
“Pinche Carl!” I cursed with a smile.
While the guys pushed I went looking for something to put on under the tires. I found a boarded up building and kicked a window in, breaking free a couple planks of wood. When I returned with the boards the guys looked at me like I was a magician.
They guys toiled away for nearly an hour in the burning hot sun, half swimming in the mud. They kept trying different ways to wedge the boards under the car but to no avail. I had forgotten sunscreen and a hat that day so I sat in the shade and weaved myself a hat of palm fronds while I waited.
Women are expected to do nothing physical in Mexican culture and since I had no desire to wade in the mud I didn’t even offer to push.
But they were getting frustrated. We were in the middle of the jungle, miles from anything. We had no food and very little water. The sun was beating down, they were covered in mud from head to toe and the mosquitoes were relentless.
We were all getting a bit nervous….
After awhile I could see they guys were not going to get the car out themselves. I checked my cell phone, no service. But it’s not like I could just check google for a tow truck number anyway. Nor was there anything like AAA roadside assistance. So I wandered off down the dirt path hoping to find some help. I got lucky and quickly came across a large truck, filled with people in the back, that had broken down after crossing a deep puddle too and taking on water. I asked if they wouldn’t mind walking with me back to the car.
Help Arrives
The boys lifted their heads and began laughing when they saw me walking down the path, wearing a ridiculous looking palm frond thing on my head, with six Mexican men following me.
I took a video as they all lunged straight into the mud, getting sprayed with each spin of the tires. After several more attempts they succeed in dislodging the car and we all began to laugh hysterically.
One Favor for Another
We drove back to where their truck had stalled. They said they needed to get it to a mechanic in the next town over. They asked if Carl thought his little car could tow such a big truck, loaded down with more than 10 people.
“You creo que si.” Carl responded equally in his matter of fact monotone voice.
What preceded was hilarious. Carl said he prefered to repay a favor with a favor. Or, as Chome put it, “un clavo seco un otro clavo” (a nail removes a nail). I have no idea how the little car pulled that huge truck dozens of kilometers over huge ruts, soggy river beds and patches of soft sand. But somehow Carl pulled it off.
When we reached the mechanic they guys in the truck came running up to Carl’s window. I didn’t understand exactly what was said but I did hear the words fish and banquet.
There is always a reason to celebrate
A few minutes later plastic tables and chairs were set up in the shade, cold beers appeared from a nearby shop and a 5 gallon bucket loaded high with fish they had caught that morning was given to a woman who lived next door so she could prepare them for us.
And celebrate we did!
We ate and drank for hours in a massive celebration of goodwill and the kindness of strangers. Eventually it got dark out, someone brought out a loud speaking and traditional mexican music was blaring. By 10pm or so I wanted to go home back to my van and rest but Carl had been drinking quite a bit and has now passed out in a hammock. I knew it was going to be several hours before I had a ride home and I might as well make piece with it.
